Hi Kareem,
I attended last night's "Subway Takes Live" show at Joe's Pub. I bought these tickets in early
August, with great excitement and anticipation. I brought 3 friends to the show. I have always
admired the honesty and respect that Kareem demonstrates in conversations with
people-whether it's a taxi driver or a vice presidential candidate.
And it was with that admiration, and a hope for a lighthearted evening, in the aftermath of a
traumatic week of political upheaval, that my friends and I came to the show last night. And the
opening act (I'd apologize for not remembering his name, but it would be insincere) reminded
me why I feel post-election that today's America deserves Trump.
The casual misogyny we were subjected to in the first few minutes was horrifying. It left us
speechless.
What's worse- some of the audience felt perfectly comfortable laughing at jokes about misogyny
days after electing an abuser, a rapist and a convicted felon to the highest office in this country.
As I sat at a table of immigrant scientists (by the way, those are real jobs), who came to this
country in hopes of furthering human understanding of diseases, health and medicine; who
have been treated unfairly by every American system; who have been subjected to racism,
misogyny and Islamophobia; who still worked during the pandemic to HELP in any way we
could; who organized and fought for worker rights in this city; who went on strike last year so our
PhD-holding colleagues wouldn't go into debt over rent and childcare costs- I felt profound
disappointment. This is my first (and probably last) email of this nature- writing to an artist with
criticism, and a plea- I wish you had chosen better and sincerely hope you do in the future.
